Download Facebook Messenger for Windows

Messenger is a new app that brings Facebook to your desktop. While you surf the web or use other applications on your computer, you can:

Chat and message with your friends on Facebook
See the latest updates from your friends in ticker
Get quick notifications about what’s going on

Messenger lets you use Facebook without being on www.facebook.com. You will now be able to stay in touch anytime, no matter what you’re doing.To try out the app, just complete a one-time setup. Note: Messenger will automatically install updates.We’d love to hear from you, if you’re using the app. Please give us feedback on your experience.

When you download and open Messenger for the first time, you will be logged in automatically. From then on, you’ll need to log in from the app and not from your browser.

Logging In

To log into Messenger

Click on the icon in your Windows system tray
Once the app opens, enter your email and password

Note that when you click on messages, notifications or ticker items, you will be directed to your browser. If you aren’t logged in, you’ll need to log into www.facebook.com to view this content.

Dock and undock the Messenger app?

Click the icon at the bottom-right corner of the window to undock the app. Click to dock it again.By default, the app is undocked so that you can easily move it around your computer screen (just click the top of the sidebar and drag it with your mouse). When it’s undocked you can also close the sidebar by clicking the ‘x’ and still get notifications and chats.When you dock the window, it stays on the right side of your screen.

How to Blackout your WordPress/Website in Protest of SOPA & PIPA

On Wednesday Jan. 18, Wikipedia and many other websites will black out their content in protest of the (SOPA)Stop Online Piracy Act, the (PIPA)Protect Intellectual Property Act and the (OPEN)Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act .

So, now days most of website owner and bloggers are worry about their websites and blogs protecting from SOPA.

How to Blackout your WordPress/Website in Protest of SOPA & PIPA?

Here are some basic tips, though maybe his most important piece of advice is to keep things simple. Don’t mess up with your DNS settings, don’t try to be too clever for your own good. You only want to participate in the blackout for one day, after all, and not suffer the SEO consequences for months to come.

1. SOPA Blackout Plugin for WordPress

This plugin allows you to set SOPA blackout dates for your WordPress website, as well as a variety of options on who the anti-SOPA is shown too. You can have it shown instead of your site for any visitor, you can only show it the first time then let your visitors continue to the site, plus a lot more. This plugin is SEO friendly with temporary redirects being used.

By default, this plugin will automatically redirect visitors from your site’s home page to a “Stop SOPA” message on Jan. 18 and 23, 2012. After the visitor has seen the Stop SOPA message, they will be able to continue to your site and will not see the message again during that browser session. There are a number of options available to customize the way the plugin behaves

2. SOPA Blackout JS Utility – The Easy Way

We’ve created a very easy way to Blackout your WordPress/Website in Protest of SOPA . Please put the following HTML snippet just above the closing tag on your website’s front page:

4. WordPress Plugin

5. 503 Header

A 503 message is very similar, but it tells Google and other search engines that this is just a temporary outage. If you know how long the outage will last, you can even tell Google when to start indexing your page again.

For example, instead of returning an HTTP result code 404 (Not Found) or showing an error page with the status code 200 (OK) when a page is requested, it’s better to return a 503 HTTP result code (Service Unavailable) which tells search engine crawlers that the downtime is temporary. Moreover, it allows webmasters to provide visitors and bots with an estimated time when the site will be up and running again. If known, the length of the downtime in seconds or the estimated date and time when the downtime will be complete can be specified in an optional Retry-After header, which Googlebot may use to determine when to recrawl the URL.

Returning a 503 HTTP result code can be a great solution for a number of other situations. We encounter a lot of problems with sites that return 200 (OK) result codes for server errors, downtime, bandwidth-overruns or for temporary placeholder pages (“Under Construction”). The 503 HTTP result code is the webmaster’s solution of choice for all these situations. As for planned server downtime like hardware maintenance, it’s a good idea to have a separate

server available to actually return the 503 HTTP result code. It is important, however, to not treat 503 as a permanent solution: lasting 503s can eventually be seen as a sign that the server is now permanently unavailable and can result in us removing URLs from Google’s index.

Implementing a 503 header page isn’t too difficult, though the details will vary according to which technologies power your site. If you’re using WordPress there’s a SOPA Blackout plugin available that can handle the blackout for you. It’s also pretty easy to create a 503 redirect at the server level. If you use Apache ensure that you have the Rewrite module installed and then add something like the following code to your root .htaccess file:
RewriteRule .* /path/to/file/myerror503page.php
That will redirect your entire website to the 503 error page. Now just make sure that your myerror503page.php page returns a 503 error. Assuming you’re using PHP, something like this will do the trick:
header('HTTP/1.1 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable'); header('Retry-After: Thu, 19 Jan 2012 00:00:00 GMT');

Don’t Mess With Your Robots.txt File

Far also tells webmasters what to do with their robots.txt file – the document that tells search engines how to (and how not to) index a page. His basic advice is to just leave the file alone. Just make sure your robots.txt file’s status code isn’t a 503.

How to Create Google+ Brand Page for Your WordPress Blog

Google has given an official go-ahead to all businesses. You can now create your own Google+ Brand page. Don’t believe us? Check out WebDesignerGeeks Google+ Brand page to see it for yourself. In this article, we will show you how to create and setup your Google+ Brand page for your WordPress site.

Step 1 : Create a Google+ Brand Page

First thing you need to do is signin to your Google account and then head to:

http://www.google.com/+/business/

Click on the Create your Google+ Page button as demonstrated in the image below:

Step 2. Insert your Brand info & Pick a Category for your Google+ Page

On the second step, you will be asked to pick a category. You can choose from:

Local Businesses or Place

Great for hotels, restaurants, places, stores, any other local service business.

Product or Brand

Great for any other product that is not local. For example, WPBeginner is an online brand.

Company, Institution or Organisation

Great for company pages, non-profits, organizations, schools, etc.

Arts, Entertainment or Sports

Great for books, bands, movies, shows etc. This can be a very broad category.

Other

If you can’t fit your business in any of the categories above, then you put it in here.

3. Adding your Brand Information for your Google+ Brand Page

Once you select your category. We selected Product or Brand, then you will be prompted to fill out additional information.

Fill out your page name, Website, pick a category. You can select who can view your page. The default is any google user, but you can restrict it to 18+ or 21+.

4. Tagline and Photo for your Google+ Brand Page

After you fill out your information, you will be asked to enter a tagline and a photo for your brand.

5. Spread the Word out and Tweak Things around

You will be prompted to spread the word out to your friends. You should. After that, you will be given a URL for your page. Sadly it is no Vanity URL yet. I wish that we can have something like plus.google.com/wpbeginner but you can’t just yet. You will be given a string of random characters like the one we have:

Facebook co-founder’s project management app: Asana in public beta

We’ve had our eye on Asana for a while, Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz’s slick-looking Web-based collaborative task and project management app that has been in private beta. Today it opened its doors to the public and we encourage you to sign up for the beta.

Asana aims to make project management easier. The ultimate goal is to make it so friction-free that it can realistically replace email for the companies that decide to use it. As the company’s founders say in the app’s About section, it’s about reducing “work about work” for the individualsand small businesses (with less than fifty employees) it’s targeted at.

So, What is ASANA

So what exactly are we up to at Asana? Here’s a peek at what we’re building and why:

We’re starting by building collaborative task and project management software. It will be free of charge, delivered over the Web, and initially suitable for both individuals and <50 person teams/companies.

In managing and contributing to projects in the past (at Facebook, Google, etc.), we felt frustrated by how much time we spent trying to stay on the same page with everyone (making sure teammates have the information they need, figuring out what everyone’s working on, clarifying priorities, …) and doing “work about work” (progress report emails, meetings, …). We’ve tried email, wikis, whiteboards, Microsoft Project, Google Docs, you name it, and while these are great for lots of things, we found everything suffered from one or both of:

They’re too cumbersome for personal private task management. Everybody’s got a text file or sticky note that’s the actual source of truth, and then every organization we’ve seen has an explicit guilt-trip-based synchronization process along the lines of “go update the wiki.” You can’t trust what’s in the shared system, so you still have to interrupt the person when you need to coordinate.We’re focused on making Asana really fast, at both the technology level (Lunascript makes apps responsive in a way that hasn’t been done on the Web before) and the product level (detailed attention to users accomplishing goals in the minimum number of keystrokes). The experience has to be at least as fast as Notepad, so fast that you’d use it for your own task management even if there weren’t a collaborative component.
Existing solutions either impose too much structure, and the inflexibility drives people back to email, or they don’t handle structure. You can allude to structure in wikis by bolding headings, but if you want to see one view of the data at your desk, a different view in the team meeting, and milestone roll-ups at the executive meeting, you have to copy-paste manually, because blobs are not queryable data. You can’t subscribe to notifications about changes to an individual row in a spreadsheet. You can’t have a discussion thread in the middle of a document without creating a mess and losing the forest for the trees.In Asana, you can tag tasks in multiple ways (e.g. by assignee and by project). If you rearrange priorities during the team meeting, team members’ individual task lists will reflect that when they get back to their desks. If a task I care about or am waiting on gets completed, my news feed notifies me, without someone needing to separately remember to email me. By understanding the structure and semantics of the data, Asana knows what info you need, and makes communication an emergent side-effect of keeping yourself organized.

Keeping groups of people organized is a problem at the heart of every organization. That’s why we’re focused on delivering a real solution with features like full text search, news feeds, per-task walls (comments + feed), infinite undo, version control, advanced sharing and privacy models, a bidirectional email bridge, LDAP integration, offline support, recurring tasks, “remind me later,” task dependencies, mobile, workflows, and visualizations (e.g. an editable Gantt chart view). Unlike heavy-duty enterprise suites we’ve tried, we’re focused on making these features fast, easy, and even enjoyable to use.

Longer term, project management is a beachhead into solving a larger set of organizations’ information management needs. Today people use separate tools for each kind of data they manage: applicant tracking, CRM, support ticket management, discussion threads, bug tracking, etc., but also one-off spreadsheets or Rails apps companies have contractors build from scratch because they have one more kind of data.

Each tool reinvents UI for managing structured records. They reinvent sharing models and access control lists. They reinvent notification and subscription — but whether a task was reassigned or a meeting moved or a ticket advanced, I want to hear about it in a single feed (and then slice and dice that feed, or see the feed for a certain project or coworker). Some tools support search, but you can’t search across your emails, docs, and customer records at once. Some tools include tagging, but there’s no unified notion of a project, where joining the team puts you on the right meetings and grants access to the right task lists and document repositories.

Asana’s task management app is a content management system for one particular kind of structured data. But we’re building it on a general structured data management platform, which we’ll leverage first to launch more applications, and ultimately to allow users and third-party developers to create custom schemas, workflows, and interfaces, all integrated with a single common data model.
